BCH Engages Local Authorities and Community Leaders to Address Challenges; Anticipates Comprehensive Report
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – Over the course of August 2023, the Bhutanese Community Harrisburg (BCH) has made significant strides in addressing the concerns faced by the Nepali-speaking Bhutanese community in Harrisburg and its surrounding regions.
AUGUST 11, 2023 – BCH initiated a constructive dialogue with local authorities. A significant meeting saw BCH representatives and officials from various counties and townships converge. BCH Chairman, Tilak Niroula, emphasized the need for a holistic approach, especially to address circulating rumors about the community. This sentiment was expressed during his interview with Samaj Times. The dialogue, which lasted over an hour, was marked by the presence of officials from the Dauphin County Board of Commissioners, Lower Paxton Township Police Department, and other regional police departments. The initiative, aimed at creating lasting solutions, was supported by a generous $25,000 grant from Dauphin County.
AUGUST 18, 2023 – A week later, BCH furthered its efforts by holding a collaborative session with community leaders. The escalating challenges, accentuated by the growth of the Nepali-speaking Bhutanese population in Harrisburg, were the focal point. Local administration highlighted challenges in community socialization and law enforcement, catalyzing BCH’s proactive discussions. A myriad of issues, ranging from driving under the influence to public disturbances, was discussed. BCH’s Executive Director, Tej Mishra, took this opportunity to share various strategies for problem-solving, with a strong emphasis on grassroots engagement. The idea of forming a diverse community group was particularly highlighted as a method to boost awareness and action.
AUGUST 23, 2023 – By the third week of August, BCH concluded its three-phase dialogue by meeting community supervisors. This discussion, enriched by the participation of the District Attorney and Probation Officers, followed BCH’s previous discussions with county officials and police chiefs. The increasing number of Nepali-speaking Bhutanese residents in Harrisburg has amplified law enforcement challenges, necessitating BCH’s dedicated efforts. The pressing concern of the rising number of arrests within the community was highlighted, emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative solutions. Following these series of discussions, Executive Director Tej Mishra informed Samaj Times that BCH is now gearing up to release a comprehensive report detailing their findings and proposed solutions.
